Servo Motor Repair

Servo Repair International, Inc. repairs and replaces many of the brands of servo motors, including PMI Kollmorgen.

PMI Motion Technologies was the US arm of Printed Motor Works which was the first to make "pancake" motors in the 1960s. PMI was sold to Kollmorgen in the 1970s and then was collectively acquired by Danaher in the 1970s. Printed disc motors offer several benefits to traditional motors; their size and shape is an obvious one, however printed disc motors have the ability to accelerate rapidly, maintain peak torque longer and change direction faster than traditional styles of servo motors, all without torque ripple that is present in all other styles of electric motors.

PMI servo motors come in a variety of sizes to meet almost any need.

Platinum Series

The Platinum Series is the direct replacement for the U-Series and S-Series motors. Available in two frame types, the U9D and U12D with twenty-four different winding options for each. Setting it apart from the U-Series was the 15-40% decrease in weight while increasing the amount of torque produced. The maximum recommended speed is 6000 RPM across the whole line and the rated terminal voltage could range from 12.5 to 60 Volts. All units with the model numbers beginning this way have a continuous stall torque of 31 oz-in to 176 oz-in or 21.9 N-cm to 124.3 N-cm. Available with optional tachometers, fail-safe brakes, aluminum armature, hardened commutator, force air cooling and optical encoders.

U-Series

The U-Series is available in three frame types, the U9, U12 and U16 with six, five and two different winding options for each respectively. The maximum recommended speed is 6000 RPM across the whole line and the rated terminal voltage could range from 12.6 to 125.7 Volts. All units with this model line have a continuous stall torque between 31 oz-in to 501 oz-in or 22 N-cm to 354 N-cm. Available with optional tachometers, fail-safe brakes, and optical encoders.

S-Series

S-Series servo motors were offered in one frame size with four different winding options. The recommended maximum speed is 6000 RPM and the maximum terminal voltage ranges from 17.7 to 34 Volts. All units within this series have a continuous stall torque range of 20 oz-in. and 85 oz-in, or 14 N-cm and 60 N-cm. Available with optional tachometers, fail-safe brakes, encoders, rugged housings and mil-type connectors.

Ferrite Series

The Ferrite Series servo motors are ideal for portable equipment with their small size and ability to run off low voltage. The can even run under 10 RPM without cogging. Available in two frame sizes, the 9F and 12F, with three different winding options for the 9F and nine for the 9F. All winding options have the maximum recommended speed of 6000 RPM and the maximum terminal voltage could range from 15 to 46 Volts. All models on this line have a continuous stall torque between 15 oz-in and 46 oz-in or 11 N-cm to 32 N-cm. Available along with optional tachometers, brakes, or encoders.

JR12 Series

The JR12 ServoDisc Series use a flat disc armature and industrial grade housing. The J12 ServoDisc series servo motors provide .55 horsepower and a maximum speed of 5000 rpm. This series provides 11 lb.-in. of continuous torque @ 25°C. Many options are found installed in the motors such as tachometers, optical encoders, fail-safe brakes, resolvers and gear reducers. The motors are available with NEMA and IEC mountings.

JR16 Series

The JR16 ServoDisc Series use a flat disc armature and industrial grade housing. The JR16 ServoDisc Series servo motors come in four models providing a range of 1.19 to1.49 horsepower; a maximum speed of 5000 rpm and a continuous torque range of 25 to 31 lb.-in. @ 25°C depending on the model. Many options are found installed in the motors such as tachometers, optical encoders, fail-safe brakes, resolvers and gear reducers. The motors are available with NEMA and IEC mountings.

JR24 Series

The JR24 ServoDisc Series use a flat disc armature and industrial grade housing. The JR24 ServoDisc series servo motors provide 4.27 horsepower; a maximum speed of 5000 rpm and 90 lb.-in. of continuous torque @ 25°C. Many options are found installed in the motors such as tachometers, optical encoders, fail-safe brakes, resolvers and gear reducers. The motors are available with NEMA and IEC mountings.

JR25 Series

The JR25 ServoDisc Series use a flat disc armature and industrial grade housing. The JR25 ServoDisc series servo motors provide 5.72 horsepower; a maximum speed of 5000 rpm and 121 lb.-in. of continuous torque @ 25°C. Many options are found installed in the motors such as tachometers, optical encoders, fail-safe brakes, resolvers and gear reducers. The motors are available with NEMA and IEC mountings.

JR33 Series

The JR33 ServoDisc Series use a flat disc armature and industrial grade housing. The JR33 ServoDisc Series servo motors provide 14.14 horsepower; a maximum speed of 5000 rpm and 298 lb.-in. of continuous torque @ 25°C. Many options are found installed in the motors such as tachometers, optical encoders, fail-safe brakes, resolvers and gear reducers. The motors are available with NEMA and IEC mountings.

Replacement Capabilities

Sometimes having an PMI/Kollmorgen DC servo motor repaired is not the best option.

Extensive motor damage or unacceptable lead times, may make replacement options a more intelligent and economical choice. Servo Repair International provides various replacement options for many PMI/Kollmorgen products. The older DC servo motors may be crossed over to newer products from PMI/Kollmorgenor other competing manufacturers. We can also provide our own direct replacement DC servo motors as replacements. Many times just a simple feedback device crossover may be needed to increase turnaround time and better performance.
