Servo Repair International, Inc. repairs and replaces many of the brands of servo motors, including SEM.

SEM founder Henry F. Joel had already been manufacturing electrical devices for several years when SEM was incorporated in 1914. Since the Seventies SEM has focused primarily on producing servo motors. SEM does not manufacture their own control devices, allowing machine builders and other distributors to pair SEM’s motors with their own drives.

NEMA and metric mounting flanges and shafts were available along with optional tachometers, brakes, encoders, or resolvers.

MT30Z4

SEM DC servo motors with the model numbers beginning with the above characters were offered in one frame size with three different winding options. Based on the winding option the maximum speed could range from 1600 RPM to 3750 RPM with a maximum terminal voltage of 140 Volts. All units with the model numbers beginning this way have a continuous stall torque of 39 to 48 Lb. In. or 4.4 to 5.5 Nm. NEMA and metric mounting flanges and shafts were available along with optional tachometers, brakes, encoders, or resolvers.

MT40

SEM DC servo motors with the model numbers beginning with the above characters were offered in one frame size with nine different winding options. Based on the winding option the maximum speed could range from 2000 RPM to 4000 RPM and the maximum terminal voltage could range from 150 to 180 Volts. All units with the model numbers beginning this way have a continuous stall torque of 70 to 260 Lb. In. or 8 to 30 Nm. NEMA and metric mounting flanges and shafts were available along with optional tachometers, brakes, encoders, or resolvers.

MT52

SEM DC servo motors with the model numbers beginning with the above characters were offered in one frame size with sixteen different winding options. Based on the winding option the maximum speed could range from 1400 RPM to 3500 RPM and the maximum terminal voltage could range from 150 to 180 Volts. All units with the model numbers beginning this way have a continuous stall torque of 70 to 260 Lb. In. or 8 to 30 Nm. NEMA and metric mounting flanges and shafts were available along with optional tachometers, brakes, encoders, or resolvers.

DBMT

SEM DC motors with models beginning with DBMT share some characteristics with the MT52 models outlined above while having some major differences. The DBMT models have a sixteen brush commutator as opposed to eight brush commutator standard in the MT52 models. In the DBMT models the brushes are arranged in two rings of eight around the commutator which is also double the length of the MT52 commutators. These alterations allow the DBMT models to offer up to a 44% increase in continuous stall torque over MT52 models depending on the winding option.

Replacement Capabilities

Sometimes having an SEM DC servo motor repaired is not the best option.

Extensive motor damage or unacceptable lead times, may make replacement options a more intelligent and economical choice. Servo Repair International provides various replacement options for many SEM products. The older DC servo motors may be crossed over to newer products from SEM or other competing manufacturers. We can also provide our own direct replacement DC servo motors as replacements. Many times just a simple feedback device crossover may be needed to increase turnaround time and better performance.
